Stop the forced eviction of Group 78

Tomorrow you'll be thrown out of your home with nowhere to go. That's the reality facing 80 families in Cambodia who in the next 12 hours could be violently evicted from their homes in Phnom Penh by the military police - despite having the legal right to be there.

What’s involved?

Send an email to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, The Hon Stephen Smith MP ( stephen.smith.mp@aph.gov.au), urging our Government to take action to stop this forced eviction. Copy in the Australian Ambassador to Cambodia, HE Ms Margaret Adamson ( margaret.adamson@dfat.gov.au), to your email, so our representative in the country knows you're thoughts on the issue too.

Why should people do this?

Cambodia has signed the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) which means they have an obligation not to carry out forced evictions. Group 78 have a legitimate claim to their land, having lived adjacent to the construction site for Australia's new embassy in Phnom Penh. Because of Australia's involvement our Government has an important role in ensuring Cambodia fulfills its obligations.

Other stuff

You can read a report on the eviction in the Phnom Penh post And read some background information via the Asia Pacific Youth Network (an organisation of Human Rights activists who've been following this case). Amnesty International Australia also have an online action on the casebut writing your own email (even if you use their form) will be more effective.
