Why do we exist ?
Belmore Youth Resource Centre has been providing youth services to the Canterbury City LGA for 10 years. It is primarily a drop-in centre that operates between 2pm and 5.30pm every Wednesday and Friday. BYRC also provides a free dental and medical service for young people living in the Canterbury area. A number of external youth organisations are also located in the centre including Canterbury Multi-Cultural Youth Health Service and Barnardos Australia.
What do we do ?
The Centre is largely used as a social meeting place for the young people in the area. BYRC provides structured programs as well as unstructured recreation activities.
What opportunities do we have for young people ?
Young people take full advantage of the internet facilities available to them and the various computer software packages for school assignments and other research related tasks.
The Beanbag Film Project provided the young people with the technical knowledge to create their own short film. It also improved their self confidence and belief within themselves as they became more comfortable in front and behind the camera. However, the most encouraging aspect of this project was the way the young people learnt how to work in a team and to form relationships. We have witnessed friendships that began throughout this project continue to this day. Participants that were new to the centre are now frequent attendees and still return to meet up with their friends that they met during the project.
