Reef Check Australia

Australia is home to the world's most extensive and pristine coral reefs. Queensland's Great Barrier Reef is one of Australia's greatest icons. Along with most other coral reefs around the world, it is under enormous pressure from human activities and climate change. Although Australia's reefs are among the best managed in the world, they are not immune to these threats.

Reef Check Australia helps by providing more information on how the natural environment functions and how it reacts to human use. Most importantly, we are able to provide long-term reliable data for our sites over a number of years. This helps to create a solid baseline - an original record of coral reef health that can be used for future comparison

Reef Check Australia is a not-for-profit environmental organisation that engages the Australian community in coral reef conservation at a unique level.

We aim to protect and help to rehabilitate Australia's valuable coral reefs through a successful recipe:
1) community education, to raise awareness of the key issues, and
2) scientific research, to collect data that contributes to solutions

Our education program, Reef IQ, is a fantastic FREE resource linked to all states curriculum. It provides information for young people on coral reefs, the environment and sustainable behaviours. It also includes a virtual surveyor online game for a fun way to interact with real footage from the Great Barrier Reef.

Our website provides a wealth of information about coral reefs and the threats facing them, which is a great resource for young people interested in diving and conservation and perhaps even finding out more about becoming a Reef Check Australia Surveyor and joining our community teams out on the reef.

We now have over 1500 registered members and we're growing all the time. Signing up to become a member of Reef Check Australia does more than just signify your support for the cause. You will receive our quarterly newsletter and updates on all our events and training courses throughout the year. We're also working on negotiating special member benefits such as discounts for dive trips, visitor attractions and dive gear.
