  • What opportunities do we have for young people ?

    MENTORING OPPORTUNITIES

Inspire school students by sharing your time, knowledge and experience. These programs need YOU!

Y- It's All About You! Leadership Program

Female mentors participate in workshops that provide young women in Year 10 with leadership knowledge and skills, and the opportunity to organise a community event. Mentors guide students through workshop activities, share their life and work experiences, and assist students in developing their leadership potential. For more information and upcoming workshops click here.

        Hip Pocket Program

Mentors participate in a school-based, highly interactive, one day financial education workshop. Hip Pocket provides students in Years 10 and 11 with skills that enable them to make informed decisions about their spending choices. Mentors guide students through activities, and share their life and work experiences and assist them in understanding the importance of managing money. For more information and upcoming workshops click here.

    Big Brothers Big Sisters Program

This unique mentoring program provides one-to-one friendship, support and guidance to children whose needs at present are not being met by their current support system. A fully trained and screened volunteer is matched with an individual child with whom they spend time with on a weekly basis doing fun everyday activities. I am volunteering at the YWCA NSW as part of my TAFE Community Services course. The Y is full of inspiring people who devout their time to running innovative education and support programs.

When I found out I was going to mentor a group of high school students about leadership (Y Its all about you! Leadership Program) and financial education (Hip Pocket Program), I thought that I should be the one doing the programs, not mentoring in them! However the training sessions soon changed my mind as they gave me all the knowledge and confidence I needed.

During the Leadership workshops, I had no problem engaging the girls in activities because they were well designed, and the facilitator was always ready to give assistance. Students were interested in my life, advice and ideas more than I expected and I was interested in theirs just as much! It was satisfying to see girls develop confidence and leadership skills as the program progressed, especially those who were struggling with the concept that everyone has the potential to be a leader. It was inspiring to see students really involved in planning and implementing the community project. I could see that the girls felt proud of themselves for participating in the program. I finished the program thinking, “I can’t wait for the next one…”
