What is heritage listing?

Heritage listing is a process by which a natural area or a place with specific cultural meaning to Australia is preserved for the future. All of the heritage matters for Australia are dealt with by the Australian Heritage Council which serves as the principal advisor for the government on heritage issues. The Council also maintains the Australian Heritage Directory, a hub for information on heritage sites in Australia. Check it out at http://www.heritage.gov.au/

Why is heritage listing important to you as an Australian?

Preservation of cultural and historical sites is a constant struggle in the modern world. Heritage listing of appropriate sites helps protect them for the future. Keeping the beautiful sites of Australia protected also helps to ensure a healthy future for the tourism industry that employs many Australians.

Should you care?

Absolutely. Helping to protect a bit of Australia for the future is a very important task. Without conservation there is no guarantee that future generations of Australians will grow up with the nature wonders that you can currently enjoy. And becoming actively involved with heritage listing might give you a warm fuzzy feeling while helping to protect important sites of Australia for the future.

Where can I go for more information?

The Australian Government has a great resource for anyone interested in knowing more about heritage listing. This site includes information on how different heritage sites get listed and the law behind the different heritage lists. Check it out at http://www.heritage.gov.au/
