Morning Coffee and Obesity 11-11-2008 10:00

I'm sitting at my desk with a much needed morning coffee. I wonder how you know if your addicted to caffeine? I think that I may be heading in that direction because I just can't seem to function without it, and to make matters worse there are dozens of great coffee shops in Balmain (near the Inspire Centre).

This month has been really great - we have been getting heaps of new content on the site and I have been editing away like a crazy grammar and punctuation machine.

The topic that has got me most passionate this month has been obesity. While updating the 'Obesity' issue I was completely shocked at how dangerously overweight we are in Australia. Jess described it as a 'fat bomb', and seeing the statistics I have to agree.

Did you know that just under 60% of Australians are overweight or obese? More than half! And it's just so sad because unlike the global financial crisis or global warming - this is something that every individual can help to work on and it will make a huge difference.

The government has a new 'Measure Up' campaign where you are supposed to measure your waist to see if you are overweight. Then you go to the government website for health advice. I hope it works because I definitely don't want to have children with a shorter life expectancy than me.

Although I'm not the best advocate for regular exercise, I know that I should do more - we all should. If only I could get out of bed without my morning coffee...

Too sunny to be inside... 22-09-2008 10:09

Well it's week 4 of my experience as an editing intern at Actnow and I have finally remembered to write something in my profile!

It's been such a busy few weeks but I have got through a lot of stuff so am feeling pretty worn out but proud. So far I have been updating and publishing issue pages on the site - delivering relevant information to your computer screens...such as the fact that we have now ratified the Kyoto Protocol and the fact that same-sex marriage is still not legal.

So now it is Monday morning and the sun is shining and the birds are singing like Disney cartoon characters - what better time to do some research into the War in Iraq!
