I am a mix of everything. Chocolate coated, milky white and kind of crunchy in the middle.

In addition to being an ActNow Intern over the 07/08 Summer, I've also volunteered with organisations such as Amnesty International, Global Volunteer Network (GVN) in orphanages in Vietnam, as well as with International Student Volunteers (ISV) in animal conservation in Costa Rica.

What gets me fired up is ignorance... What makes me laugh is the innocence of little kids. Family, friends, strangers, pictures, photos and nature are sources of inspiration. I've decided to be involved in the little steps to creating a better world. I'd like to see change.

The problem of printing costs has been solved! Instead of spending a fortune to print 3 cards at a professional printing house, I've realised I can do it right here in the Inspire office. With thanks to Kiri (for helping out design a professional layout of the card on the ActNow comps), I'll be manufacturing the cards today here in the office!

Costs = nil. Perfect.

The Action card has been completed!... Printing costs were more than expected, otherwise no major dramas.

After a bit of hair pulling and lots of scribbling, I have finally finished the design of the Action Project card- and now all that awaits is its production. Hopefully with the help of my cousin (who is a graphic designer) and the availability of a good printer (that will colour print on recycled card),  I'll have the card by the end of this week or the beginning of next week :)

Ok, so I feel a little behind schedule. I'm about a week behind according to my Plan (which I have posted below). However, this week I've created my Action Project page (it will be posted on the ActNow homepage as a Thing to Do in the next week or so). Before I post the page on the site, I've decided I'd like to start distributing the cards first (I've decided to create 3 cards). My Action Project page is currently being edited/commented on by Jess and fellow interns. This weekend I'll work on creating the cards...My aim is to complete them by the end of next week (Week 6 of Internship). Keep tuned for more exciting adventures.

Until next time amigos (when I'll hopefully reveal my hot little Action Project card),

Rita

EMPOWERMENT

Giving power to your vision

Step 1: The Good Stuff

I love the simplicity of my idea and how it’s a slightly different approach to creating change. My vision is based on how small changes/actions have the potential to bring about bigger changes.

Growing up in a multicultural city like Darwin, I found it surprising and somewhat disheartening to move and have to make a life for myself in a city like that of Sydney that is very multicultural, in the sense that there are many different racial groups and cultures, however very culturally segregated…divided… isolated. I believe that my vision is important as it will, hopefully, be a small beginning to changing this. To encourage everyday, ordinary people to find human compassion and to open themselves up/share a small part of themselves with someone who is of a different racial background.

Step 2: The Challenges

Monitoring and keeping track of who and how people are paying it forward may be a challenge.

Step 3: The Other Stuff

An idea suggested by Kelly Simpson for keeping track of who and how people are paying it forward is to create an ActNow card which is to be passed onto each person paying it forward. This card could include a short description of the Action Project, and website address where people can find more information and share their experiences.

I am thinking of creating a website page within the ActNow website or turning my own member page on ActNow into a site where people can learn about the Action Project, as well as follow it over time. This site could include a photo gallery (of those who have paid it forward), updates of how the Action Project is going and basically provide a place for people to share their experiences of how they paid it forward.

MY VISION

I will be encouraging member of society by the method of “Paying It Forward”* to embrace and celebrate cultural diversity and by doing so, create less cultural segregation in the city of Sydney.

* “Paying It Forward” can be basically seen as a chain of random acts of kindness, and starts with one person choosing to perform a random act of kindness for someone of different racial background to themself… whether it be a small gesture of kindness such as buying a coffee for the next person in line, or something bigger such as volunteering in a local community service group… the only catch is that person who receives that gesture of kindness must then ‘pay it forward’ to someone else who is of different racial background to themself… and so on…
