Katanga is a south eastern province of the DRC. The situation in Katanga is dire with hundreds of thousands of people suffering multiple displacements, direct violence by a variety of armed groups, malnutrition, and recurring outbreaks of preventable diseases.

Since peace was officially declared in the DRC two years ago, there have been several waves of violence in Katanga Province. Militia groups have attacked villages, burned homes, looted possessions, and killed and raped during these rampages. Since August 2005, fighting and violence between armed groups has displaced more than 100,000 Congolese civilians.

Food insecurity and malnutrition, is also rising. There are also urgent medical concerns, including malaria, respiratory infections and diarrhoea, resulting from thousands of displaced people forced to live in overcrowded and unhygienic conditions. The region is still plagued by regular outbreaks of epidemic diseases like measles and cholera.

MSF has been working in the Katanga province of DRC since 1988, and now works in nine locations throughout the province. MSF provides a wide range of services including healthcare through hospitals, health centres, mobile clinics, vaccination campaigns, nutrition centres, emergency water and sanitation and Non-Food Item distributions, primary and secondary health care, treatment for malnutrition, emergency surgery, mobile health care, long-term tuberculosis treatment and care for victims of sexual violence.
